“Can Emmett keep a secret?” the little girl asked me in earnest.
“Emmett is an excellent secret-keeper,” I said. “In fact, he’s never spilled one single secret ever.”
She nodded. It was the answer she was hoping for.
She trotted over to Emmett, bent down, put her face right up to his ear, and started whispering. Emmett, to my eternal gratitude, sat up straight and listened intently.
“Okay,” she said with a curt nod. “He knows my secret.” She turned back. “Don’t tell, Emmett!”
That is one of the best stories I’ve ever heard.
